ss45466's turbo IX build now with m3 content

Postby ss45466 » Tue Feb 01, 2011 4:17 pm

Guess I should start one of these... I know I'm leaving a ton out but here we go:

I had the oppertunity to buy an 89 IX from my boss after I had done alot of maintenance work to it and the customer could not pay for it. So I picked it up and repaired some body panels (front valence, headlights, foglights and drivers fender) After a few months of driving it as an auto I swapped it out to a 5 speed with the correct 3.91 gear ratio diffs. Fallowed by some performance mods, mega squirt PNP. Rebuilt the suspension, raised the rear subframe and installed poly bushings and m-coupe diff cover. I got it runnung fairly well and there was a definate improvement in power output. But that was short lived, I started gathering turbo components....

I started with a tiny t3/t4 garrett journal bearing turbo with a 524TD manifold, water to air intercooler, 42lb. injectors and 3in downpipe routed back into the stock cat (gutted), tial 50mm bov, and 38mm turbonetics wastegate. Full boost came on @ 1800rpm and I could feel the power drop off on the top end from the exhaust restriction. Pt. 2 I upgraded to a turbonetics t3/t4 GTK series ball bearing turbo and full 3in exhaust with a 18in glasspack and borla xr1 series muffler. Full boost came on @ 2800 rpm. Power was great! I easily defeated many sti's and evo's. Recently (about 2-3 weeks ago, now parked) the bottom end has decided to give up the ghost, lower compression and a slight knock can be heard :( I think alot of the reason it failed was how the previous owner took care of her...

Now I moved on to the interior and ordered a kit from The Artisan, Kevin at Creative Options. So far I have only recieved the front seat material and he is working on the rest. I think it looks awesome.

And finally on to what I'm doing @ the moment is building an M20 based stroker with an M52 crank/rods, custom pistons from JE, and some head work with p/p and cam/springs/retainers from VAC motorsports... so on to the pics:

When I first got it:

I put some ATS 17x7.5 Et38 wheels w/ yoko parada spec2 205/40's on:

So you're going to stroke the engine and still boost it? Will the IX hardware hold up to that much abuse? Freaking beautiful car man! well done sir.

It should handle the power, Theres a guy running over 600 hp, but he keeps breaking front diffs, I'm only looking to be ~400hp.

Been good for over a year on boost, 16-17 psi, a few hard launches too...

I spaced out my front driveshaft, they are known to strip the splines and used the correct lube, molykote br-2 from dow corning

I have a new transfer case viscous coupling, the origional one was burnt when I bought it.

So Far so good... I try not to over abuse it.

gorgeous IX man, very nice. Do you plan on matching the valance to the rest of the car? Kevin does great work, be sure to post pics as you make progress!

Kevin is finishing the rest of the kit as we speak. Pics will definatly be posted!

There are a few more things I have coming together as well!

Heres a little teaser for those with an IX will know:

DAAAMMMM Loving the car... wheels really set it off, very clean engine bay...

Sucks to hear about the knocking noise... Hell, I chuck missing from my piston, spun main and rod bearings, major walk in crack (fly wheel even knew that :( ) never made a bad noise.... LOL Hell, I still out ran people on 5 cylinders.... but when the smoke appeared on de-accel....(assumed it was guides, till we comp checked it.... ) but looked like a turned up diesel... just not as black. I said FUCK. I drove it another two weeks.... without boosting her. Never made a noise... soo that's crazy.... on one of our parts...

I want to see what's in that bottom end....

Thanks!

Heres where I'm at now, honed the cylinders and they are perfectly round, got the crank installed with seals, gaskest and new bearings (all mains were in spec :D) ordered pistons from TEP on friday, 3 weeks out.

Image

Here you can see where you have to grind the drain tube boss to clear the 2.8 (84mm) crank:
Image
Image

Cylinder head is together minus the new cam, retainers and valve springs:
Image

And what I was hinting about were some Euro 3.64 gears front and rear:
Image

The head behind the gears is junk, bought it off someone and found out it had been rebuilt without assembly lube, There was a ton of scoring in the cam journals and the rocker arms were almost worn through to the aluminum.( I planned on sending it out to be o-ringed) Good thing I had a good one on the extra engine I'm building.

Once I swap out the engines I will tear down the one in the car to see exactly what the damage is...

Well just got email conformation, the pistons will be in on monday!

Ordered the cam, retainers, and springs from VAC on monday, they told me they might want to build a custom cam for my setup, I don't want to wait a long time for it though. So Ill wait to hear from them soon and go from there...

Oil pump and rod bolts should be in on friday. Pics will be up on Monday of the pistons.

Stock gearing is 3.91 for manuals, 4.10 for autos. (I have all 3 ratios) I'm looking at top end. It will also make it cruise easier in 3rd.

I wanted to get it welded but I don't know anyone around here (or the greater NM area) that can do it right. I will probbably get another head and send it out for welding and o-ringing for when I eventually turn up the boost! But I still need to get a proper exhaust manifold first.

The valence was there just bent out of shape, I got a new front valence that was NOS out of Georgia. It's parked now for an engine build. I'm over @ Mozart's -no affiliation with the owner- I am the tech there. I try to give hookups to everyone I know but the boss doesn't like it... In the next few weeks I will be up and running, if the cam isn't delayed. Stop by or PM me here or the tech.
