Don't worry, I shaved my head soon after this picture.

On the bright side, my garage now has drywall and insulation! I'm gonna mud and paint in the spring since it's so cold and I'm lazy. I just wanted to get all of this in before it got too cold.

Bummer you're out of the e30 game, but e46 is a good platform. If I ever wreck the e30 it will get replaced with an e46m3. I need to start getting up on newer chassis, I'll be looking for a new daily in the next couple years and I want a newer 5 series. I always like the e39 but by the time I'm in the market they'll be too old, and I know nothing about the newer models. I'll likely be wanting something certified used so probably 2015+.

E46 M3s are more expensive than they are worth. People always complained to me about how BMWs needed "special tools" to work on them. Really it was just internal and external torx bits. But so many other manufacturers use it.

Now with the E46 and newer, you need special vanos timing tools that are ONLY useful for that motor set. For the M3, the parts are expensive because it's an M car. E36s avoided this by having the USDM M3 motor being different than the euro models and thus sharing far more parts with the non M models.

The reason I went with the 330 was because it's a baby M. Bigger brakes/axles/etc. Regardless, I'm just shoving on the M3 rear suspension bits in a year or so. So what do I care? Yea sure an E46 M3 can shove out 300whp with enough tuning. But for the headache, I'll have my LS2 in my car and make tons more power/tq.

Course to even go farther down the line, The E46 is the same age as my E30 was when I first got it. So it looks like I have to trade up cars every 10 years? I could go for an E90 but they seem plagued with issues. F30s seem nice but are still too expensive.

It's annoying that cars age lol. I mean, I'm not super in love with the E46. I hate the rear suspension design inherently. Subframe tears and jazz. The looks are growing on me. Esp since my new car is a face lift.

I never liked the e36. Test drove a few when I was looking for my e30 and confirmed they are crap. I remember when my neighbor growing up got an e46m3 new, it imprinted on me, love the styling. It it starting to look aged, but as a replacement for the e30 (should I need one), it would be be a perfect fit for me. I wouldn't go full race with it like I did the e30. Kinda regret it now TBH, but it is what it is. I'd keep it mostly stock, go more for looks and get what I can from tuning and bolt-ons and be done.

For a daily, want something turn key reliable and preferably under some sort of warranty. I'm getting old, need comfyness and reliability for the ~2000 miles/mo I drive just to/from work. I don't get much time to wrench these days, and when I do I don't want to spend it fixing my daily...

You sound like me aside from not wanting to wrench. I don't have the time to, but I like wrenching. I've been looking into tools to make things faster. Next up on my list is an electric ratchet wrench. I got the impact to break stuff loose but some places are too tight. Like you get one click from a regular wrench. So if I can get an electric wrench in there after breaking it loose, done!

If you want to go cheaper, the 330 is a good option (M3 engines are $$). 40hp more than the other models, bigger brakes and axles too. The late model E46 is growing on me over the early.

E36s... always drove fine, but everything in the cabin just felt cheap to me. The whole chassis felt floppy. Granted, most of the ones I drove were beat. But even the most beat E46 I've driven was much better. Both have that MFing subframe tearing.

Also yea I regret going so race on my E30. Poly degrades too fast and I don't want solid mounts. I think rubber with filling the gaps with eurethane or something might be the way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I still love wrenching on stuff, just not BS maintenance on my daily. The little time I have to spend in the garage these days I would rather spend on fun stuff like bolting turbos to stuff.

I found Derlin to be the perfect performance mount material. It doesn't degrade, but it absorbs some (not much) vibration while eliminating movement.

On a half daily car, delrin is a bit too harsh to me. I can always change my mind. For now it's just going to stay stock as it is now unless it turns out the stuff in there now is bunk.

I just got myself an electric wrench. After I got an expensive electric impact gun, my time in the garage has sped up so much. I hope the electric wrench will help that too. I'm trying to find ways to do things faster now. But yea I'll agree on regular maintenance. I haaate doing stuff over and over. At least on the subaru, most things I do are new. So it's a little interesting.
