My new $5000 daily driver.

Postby M20_fever » Sun Nov 11, 2012 11:29 pm

Couldn't pass this one up. 2000 Passat 4Motion with the 190hp/200Tq 30v V6. It has no heat, hopefully it just needs a good back flush, otherwise I gotta put a new core in it. I already ordered a timing belt kit for it since the PO doesn't know when it was last done. It needs a new front right CV, but I got a new one with the car, just need to install it. The trans acts up a little once in a while when its cold, so I'm going to drain and refill the trans pan every oil change. I think that will be a nice slow flush that won't dislodge any crap and should help, otherwise I may end up rebuilding the trans. Other than that its a nice car, no rust, power everything, heated seats, good stereo, just needs a good cleaning and some general maintenance like oil change, etc...This car should pay its self off in a few months just in fuel savings over driving my truck every day.

onto the pics!

Well I'm jealous. Would love a $300 winter car to keep the salt of the E30.

Not a bad looking car for $300. The puppy dog seems to like it :)

yup, its dog approved! Its really a clean car all around, which is why Im getting ready to put so much labor into getting it reliable. Total parts investment will be less than $400, but the labor will be arouns 16 hours at least.

I'll try to send the bracket out Thursday. You should get it on Friday then I would think. :) I have to study for a test tonight and I don't think I can get to the shop today.

ok, update since this thing is all I've been working on the last week, lol. Got the car tore down to do the tbelt and found the PCV system is clogged, which was causing oil to push past the oil fill cap. Looks like its been doing it for a while, everything was covered in gunk. So, jobs taking much longer because I've been cleaning everthing as I disassemble.

oil leak

and apparently the serpentine belt was rubbing all over the place at some point.

the POs solution to that hard coolant line getting warn through since you need to take the front clip off to replace it.
Image
Image

honestly, he did a pretty damn good job on those lines. The replacement OE parts are well over $100 and I see no need to replace them at this point. I varified all the routings are correct per the ETK, and he used top quality lines and fittings so...I'll just zip tie everything up nice when it goes back together.

old timing belt still on, but almost ready to replace it. It didnt look that bad, this car was obviously well taken care of most its life.
Image

all the old stuff off, water pump was another sign of prior maintenance since it was the updated one with the metal impeller. Thermostat out and gasket surfaces cleaned up. tbelt tensioner, and idler pully pulled off for replacement.
Image

goodies!
Image

goodies installed!

I'm waiting on the PCV kit to show up to button the engine up. In the mean time I moved onto the exhaust. Basically the flex pipe between the cat and header had rotted out, causing 7 codes to be thrown. The PO tried rigging something up without removing the exhaust, but it was a hot mess and leaked like crazy, so obviously didnt help. Plus the car was pretty loud, in a bad way, lol. So I cut the cat off, cut off the mess the PO made and welded a new input pipe into the cat which was still good, used some universal flex pipe and pipe clamps and replumbed it. Tured out pretty for for a $19 fix if you ask me, best pics I could get, sorry.

and this is how she currently sits.

Still have to do:
oil change
cv axle
top off trans
instal new PCV
reassemble
backflush heater core

really cant wait to drive her, and neither can Bear!

-grin-

yeah, it makes any job a pita. Alternator, power steering, fan clutch, anyyhing on the front of the engine means the front clip comes off...

How long does it take to pull the front clip? I can see how once it's off, it's super easy to do everything you would ever need to do.

Now that I've done it once, I could probably do it again in about 2 hours. Yeah, once the clip is off its pretty easy to get at everything. There are a couple special tools I may look into picking up that let you slide the whole core support/front clip like 6" out instead of all the way off like I have it now. That would make life a little easier TBH, because having it all propped up like that is a pain, and unless I unhook the AC lines I can't pull it totally away from the car.

I can't tell if this is because cars are getting more advanced so there's more shit, or engineers are just being dicks.
