They don't kill car hobbies, just slow them down a little. Honestly if I didn't have so many expensive hobbies my car projects wouldn't need to slow down. I'm unbridled middle of redoing the interior of my boat, and installing a wakeboard tower on it, so that's killing my fun budget at the moment.

I think you mean to say your fun budget is allocated elsewhere. Sounds like you're still spending it on fun stuff to me :D

I've been waiting 5 years for a turbo E30. I bought my turbo 2 months ago, and still no turbo E30. By the time I'm done, electric conversions will be the cool thing; instead of BOVs letting off, electric whirring will be the new cool go fast noise.

I kinda miss the days when I didn't have the cash to spend on major components. So I had little things like footwell lights and a nice sound system. Now it's so low on my priority list that I never get to them. And my cars are down for far longer.

That's kinda why I'm playing with the boat now. The e30 is at a point where there is only major upgrades to do, and stuff like footwell lights don't make sense on a race car. The boat is fun because I can do all the quick fun little projects like LED lighting and sound system stuff. I've even been considering selling my ms3 and supercharger since it will probably be a couple more years before I can even think about a project that big...

Sigh...not the update I wanted to be making today, but update none the less. The Passat is in the shop, I just didn't have time to mess with it anymore and I need it to be a reliable daily.

List of work being done:
Front control tie rods
struts
front springs (stock)
F/R wheel bearing
F/R CV axle
Cam tensioner gaskets/ half moon seals
valve cover gaskets
new radiator
power mirror switch replaced
drivers rear door handle
o2 sensors

Stuff I replaced in the last 5 months:
timing belt
water pump
thermostat
PCV system
vacuum system
coolant tank
F/L CV axle
headlight housings
plugs
tires

So it should be like new when I get it back...and after I fork over ~$3k...

To add insult to injury I broke 2 of the 5 leafs on the drivers rear spring on the truck which I've been DD since the Passat went in two weeks ago...So if I can get the springs tomorrow I'll fix the truck Saturday, if I can't source them local I'll have to wait until next weekend and order them online. If that happens I'm buying some $22 Autozone rear pads to slap on the e30 and I'll be DD the race car for a week or so, lol.

Dang, sucks to hear that man! Gah I hope my cheap daily doesn't result in a massive bill later down the road too.

The shocks were totally blown, which puts a lot of stress on the spring. All springs fatigue, this one probably had some microscopic flaw that resulted in a failure. The car has 150k on it...
