My new baby!

Postby 87e30 » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:47 am

Just picked her up an hour ago. 2 days ago I walked out of a 7-11 and someone asked me if I was interested in parts for my car because he had an 85 that was in a very minor accident. Today I went to look at it and took it off of his hands. It's a beige with black leather 4 door 318i auto without a spot of rust anywhere that I can see except where the damage is up front (fender, hood, and a tiny bit of damage on the drivers door). Checked in the little cubby holes in the trunk and it's beautiful! Threw a battery in her and off I went. The damage to the front is similar but probably a little less than on my 325. There are several other little things here and there that need attention. Little trim pieces missing, cracked radiator fan, the trunk full of trash, cracked lights all around, 1 tire is torn up with tread hanging and the spare has a plug in the sidewall, the lack of 3rd pedal and manual transmission :-P and other random stuff that I'll get around to fixing eventually. I'll take better pictures one of these years, but here's one when I was putting 20 bucks of premium in a few minutes ago.

Ooh, and the fuse box cover looks like brand new! And almost forgot to mention she only has 73,000 miles on her! :-D

Beige? That looks pretty alpine-ish to me haha. Either way nice pick-up, 73k miles is crazy!

It's the gas station lighting that makes it look white. I took a picture of them both side by side and you can tell a huge difference. Too tired to e-mail it to myself from my phone to post it though.

The rear is clean, but the front doesn't look so hot. It's really not THAT bad. I'll need a new hood and drivers side fender (as opposed to hood and passenger side fender on my 2 door), 2 new lights, new grill pieces (that I already have), and some metal bent back into shape. The rad support is a little bent, but it doesn't look as badly bent as the 2 door, and the damage is all on the drivers side.

I can hardly believe that BOTH of my e30's have crack free dashboards! lol

I would honestly love an early M10 car to play with.

I talked the guy down from $800 to $500. I probably could have gotten him down lower but I didn't want to rip the guy off. I feel I got a great deal even after the work I have to put into fixing the front. I'll get some more pictures when I find some batteries for my camera.

And I've read that stock m10's can handle boost much better than built m20's. Can anyone comment on this?

Lol, no. Search out NoSco's build thread on tech. He's around 400hp with his turbo m10 and probably has $10k in it to get there. On the other hand Ben Fenner was over 400hp on a basically stock m20 pushing 21psi. Everyone thinks that since the m10 was the basis for the 1500hp F1 engine in the '80s that it has all kinds of potential, when in reality the only thing shared between the two engines was the block, and even that was modified for race use. I honestly can't think of an engine that takes boost stock better than an m20.

Yeah...why? The straight-6 is one of the reasons I love BMWs. The current M3 is an awesome performer, but the engine is one of the big reasons I way prefer the E46.

If I HAD to swap, I'd probably just drop in a M52B28 and then wait a little longer for boost. However, if you're like me and have cheap, easy access to an M20 (mine's in good shape and already in the car), and you really want a turbo e30, just go with the M20.

Mainly because I keep hearing the 4 cylinder cars are a lot more toss able and nimble, and those early ones are stupid light (2400-2500 lbs). And trust me, I agree whole heartedly, a straight 6 is what makes a BMW, a BMW. But a little M10 car would make a fun DD I think. And they have to get way better gas mileage than my M20 does. And lastly I want to keep my M20 or whatever I6 ends up in my car NA, but I wouldn't mind eventually trying my hand with forced induction. Yeah it's not going to but out loads of power, but when I inevitably blow it up it's not a huge loss. IDK this would be a long ways down the road if it ever happened. But I do want a 2nd E30 as a did, so if I found a cheap M10 I'd go for it.

Have you driven a stock m10? Omg they are slow. Lol!! M42 is way better. :)

Nice pick up by the way. Not a bad deal for $500

Oh yeah I'm sure haha. But I do like my early models ;) Either way I never see 4 cylinder E30's around here.
