Tony,

There's a 1990 318i for sale locally that was in a little fender on the passenger side. I was thinking about grabbing it for a parts car, does your dad need anything for his off it? Its diamond schwartz

Texted you about this, but yeah based on the pics the rear bumper and pass door look like I could use them. Are you using the grills? Throw up some better pics when you get it and I'll see what else I can use.

Ok, I don't know IF I am going to get it. I honestly don't need another car sitting on my property... Figure the City might get pissed. lol

Dude wants $800 for it, but he's got some snow tires too. If he throws them in, it would probably be worth it.

ok, so I braved the insane cold tonight to do a little digging on the power draining issue.

I did the old hook up a multi-meter in series thing with the battery to read the amp draw with the car off. At rest, the meter was picking up around 4 amps assuming I was using the meter right.... (I am not to savvy with those things.....) Anyway, I started pulling fuses and found that when pulling fuse 21 the draw disappeared. Well, that leaves many circuits that could be the culprit.

- Auto-charging flashlight
- Ignition key warning/seatbelt warning
- Interior lights
- Radio/antenna
- Trunk light
- Multifunction clock
- Service interval indicator

Of that list, these are the things that do not work now., interior lights, trunk lights and I think the tach/mpg gauge is tied into that as well, which doesn't work either. So I am assuming that it is probably related to one of those things. another thing to notice, the amp draw changes when I open the drivers side door, but not with the passenger side... any idea about that???

Also checked the alternator, it was outputting 13.6V while running so I assume that's ok.

What actually causes the draw? Can a bad ground or something do it? I am not very good with the electrical side of things so any assistance would be great!!!

Thanks!

Matt

The switch for the drivers side door chime is what's drawing the extra amps when you open the door. You know what circuit is bad, so time to dig deeper and test each component on the circuit one at a time. I would start with the radio since a bad installation (aftermarket?) can cause constant draw. If that checks out I would look at the interior/trunk lights for bad grounds or frayed wires.

Stock radio I believe for the car. Can I simply unplug the interior lights/door switches to find the bad circuit?

You can start with that, but if the problem is in the harness it may still be grounding out somewhere.

Ah, so a frayed wire could be the cause? Sorry, I don't know much about electrical systems.... lol

Also, if I open the door though, the draw goes away.... they don't increase.

wait, the draw goes away when you open the door? So it drops to zero with the door open?

Well, it actually changes...but I guess I can't tell if its going up or down because the meter goes from 4.07a to 1. Just a one.

Fix rust, 5sp swap, few simple cosmetics and keep it stock. Next e30 I purchase will be left mostly stock with only OEM mods. Nice find!
