the m50 i got fully rebuilt, new pistons, rings, rods, redecked, honed, arp bolts all over the place and a thick metal headgasket.

Will be looking into sourcing turbo parts soon, but I figured id get it running off megasquirt before that happens

Ah not a bad idea. Although, honestly, I'd go with just a chip. I did the MS route and wound up getting an rk tune chip. Made things much simpler and kept costs down.

Yeah there are a handful of well-known setups based on chipped ECUs that put down more power and better powerbands than you'll ever need. For M5x/S5x, the only advantage of MS is its flexibility. If you're planning on making lots of changes over time or have a setup in mind that isn't supported by any of the chips on the market, then Megasquirt is a better idea.
