Let's call is #spare30

Postby jim.moore » Fri Jun 30, 2017 7:19 am

Hi. I'm brand new to the board. I'm WAY late to the e30 game, but glad I'm finally here. I'm in the process of doing a street/race conversion to an '85 318i. I'm fortunate enough to have a family member who campaigned a set of e30s in ChumpCar for a few years. Eventually, he outgrew the series and has sinced moved up to moved to bigger/faster/better things. Bonus for me, because I now have a garage full of spare parts and various go fast bits. And a complete '87 325is donor car.

Because I wanted a streetable car, I decided to start with something that still had a dash and basic interior. I found the perfect car in SoCal. A garage kept Bronzit 318 with 80k miles. Nary a dent let along rust. Super clean.

Thus far, I've comprehensively replaced or upgraded all the suspension and chassis bushings. Most everything has been upgraded to poly. Also swapped over the larger IS suspension struts and schocks, as well as the 3.73 LSD. Fresh wheel bearings all around to go with the new disks on all four corners. Also installed a set of H&R race springs on Bilstein sports shocks.

Next on the list is a 2.9l stroked IE M20 engine with IE headers and RHD ITBs. I have the full lower ready to go. Waiting for the port/polish work on the head. Also swapping in a fresh getrag 5-speed as the car was originally an auto.

As mentioned above, I want the car to be streetable as its primary focus will be the canyons surrounding Los Angeles, such as Mulholland or Angeles Creast Hwy.

I like how there's just a cut off E30 front sitting there... like why did you need to do that?! lol.

What's your mechanical background? A 2.9 isn't exactly the most common thing you see people do. Why pick that platform instead of a stock M20, or M30, or any other motor?

Ha. Front end was grabbed out of a salvage yard exclusively for the IS front valence. I'll be using that on my car as well. The red parts car is an '87, so it has the early style front valence. I prefer this later design.

As for mechanical background, just a chump who likes turning wrenches. Fortunate enough to have access to resources, so might as well have some fun. My job affords me the opportunity to work on some fun builds, but this one is my personal build. Unfortunately, that means personal budget.

On the topic of the 2.9l, much of the strategy on this build is dictated by what's already available in the garage. The 2.9l was built to compete in Chump Car, specifically the 24h endurance races. It's my understanding that the 2.9l proved more reliable than the 3.1l stroker. The race motors were obviously run very hard. I envision a much calmer life for the motor in my car.

Here are a few other builds I've worked on:

So... you seem to know what you're doing then!

Can't wait. Please document with pictures. I love seeing good work.

Will do. I would caution anyone from assuming I "know what I'm doing." I just do until I discover I did it right or wrong. Generally speaking, wrong happens more than right. 8)

A guy who likes Diesels and e30s, I approve. Thats a nice build you have going. The 2.9 is a great choice, I LOVE my 2.8, and when I was building it I found that the 3.1, or even 3.2 just required too big of a bore, which results in cylinder wall deflection under hard use. 2.8 with proper supporting head work made the M20 a whole different animal. Glad you're here and super excited to see progress on this build. Maybe it will motivate me to get my Chevelle done enough to make room for the e30 again so I can actually get my turbo installed, lol.

Were it up to me, the whole world would be diesel. Unfortunately, the EPA begs to differ.

Yeah, also excited about this build. It's going to go in spurts as I find free weekends here and there. That said, my goal is to have it buttoned up by the end of the year. I considered doing an S52 or even an LS, but there's just something that feels special about the M20 in the e30 chassis. Like peanut butter and chocolate, they just belong together. And keeping it N/A just makes it all the more special. There would have been easier paths, but the combination of available resources and keeping to the e30 ethos or light and simple, I think this is the right direction.

Or by a Camaro, same thing.

Jim, I think you and I were cut from the same cloth.

I love diversity. Diesel, gas, turbo, supercharger, naturally aspirated, dirt, road, long travel, short travel. I'm very open minded.

Me too, if it has an engine and I can push it's limits, I'm game. Built a high compression push mower that ran on race gas back in college, thing was awesome, would throw grass over the fence into the neighbors yard, lol.
