1986 Baur cracked head repair help!

Postby john.pearce » Thu Feb 22, 2018 11:48 pm

My beloved red 1986 325E Baur has a cracked head! I've had this car for 20 years, would love to find an enthusiast/mechanic in Northern California to get it fixed and keep this car on the road. Any suggestions would be appreciated, John Pearce, johnkpearce@comcast.net. Thanks!

Glad to see you got in John, I fixed your pic. Gonna need better pics of that car for sure! ;)

we've got a pretty strong network in the community to find you a reputable shop and good used parts to get her rolling again.

Did your current mechanic tell you where the head was cracked? Between the coolant passage would be my guess. Are you getting coolant in the oil (milkshake) or coolant into a cylinder?

This guy is selling complete m20 engines, most likely 2.7e engines for complete for $500-600. Can't hurt to ask if he has a spare 2.7 head laying around. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/pts/d/bmw-engines-m20-m40-m42-s52/6501218822.html

This dude specifically has m20 heads for sale: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/pts/d/bmw-e30-parts-galore-325i/6501221696.html

We should probably confirm what the problem is before making assumptions. What symptoms made you take it in to the shop in the first place? Milky oil? smell of burning coolant? knocking noise?

Can you post a picture of the engine?

Here is info on the Baur registry, which you should do ASAP. There were only 430 325e Baurs made TOTAL: http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Baur and the registry is here: http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/E30_Baur_Register

I'll update here when I hear back from my west coast folks. In the mean time, lets see more pics! -grin-

I find a cracked head to be pretty odd for a car that isn't turbocharged. If you want to keep the engine for the long term and you have the will power, I would pull the motor and do a full rebuild. Probably doesn't need it, but why not do a full restoration? Change everything out while you're in there.

But yea, I'm suspicious of your current mechanic's diagnosis without more information. Refurbished heads aren't too expensive. You could even pay just to have your current one repaired (but I don't suggest that).

Had a few e3o people in Northern Cali highly recommend Ryan's shop. I'd give him a call and see what he says.

I still think we need some more info on exactly what the symptoms you are having are, I agree with Yoshi cracked heads are very rare on stock M20s.

Good talking to you last night John. If it turns out you need a head I found one for you for $40. Still be surprised if it's not just a head gasket.
