Yoshi's overfenders

Postby Yoshi » Fri Oct 23, 2009 1:09 pm

Fender pulling isn't working. So I'm going to make over fenders. David gave me the idea.

Anywho, The idea is to shoot this stuff called "The Great Stuff" which is expanding foam shizzle. Shape this stuff once it's dry, then shove some fiber glass over top of it. If it looks good, I'll make negatives and sell em lol.

I put down some painter's tape so it doesn't get too stuck on the paint. These pix are while it's still expanding. Took 2 cans so far. $8 so far. Might take another can but thats it.

interesting idea, you going to shape it with a palm sander? If this works I'm going to give it a try so I can run 245s all around.

Anywho, Tested the fiberglass out tonight. Just one piece over to of some of the foam. Didn't eat though at all. It actually came off easily.

So here's progress. I used an exacto knife to get all the big stuff off. Then went at it with an orbital sander. I'm kind of at a loss as how to handle the molding area but you get the idea. I'm trying to blend naturally and have a flat lip where the wheel is.

If I was doing this I would do another coat of great stuff to fill in all the gaps so you can get a good smooth contour. It will make it a lot easier to make sure everything is straight. How do you plan to mirror to the other side?

I'm just going to redo the other side while looking at the fiberglass piece of the other side.

I'll fill in the huge gaps with more foam then the small gaps with bondo before fiberglassing.

That's still pretty quick. I can't wait to see how it all goes.

This reminded me of a sweet E28 race car build from sweden. They made their own widebody fenders by cutting (or channeling if you will) the front fenders and welded in braces to widen it. They turned the car into a coupe and did the same widening in the rear. Here are some pics and a link to the build. The whole thing is sick.

You could fill it, but I'm guessing he uses it to keep the tires at a good temperature. Either way, its pretty clever and very well done. I might try this on a junk chassis.

How much does that foam weigh per can and how many cans did you need?

Cans are fairly light. not like it matters tho cuz I'm taking it off once the fiberglass sets. I used about 3 cans so far but I got the regular stuff. "Great stuff" also comes in an uber extra expansion thing that actually did a much better job today. I'll post pix tomorrow.
