e30 eco build

Postby 87e30 » Wed May 08, 2013 9:40 pm

I have a friend that has been driving Honda's for the past several years due to the great gas mileage they get. He told me the other day he's in the market for another Honda because he enjoys his 40MPG highway travel. I told him to get an e30 instead.

Now I know e30's don't get near 40MPG stock, but has anyone done an economical fuel saving build that I could recommend to him? I need opinions and/or facts here. If anyone has gotten 40+ out of an e30, which engine/transmission did you use? What mods did you make? What octane do you run? Do you drive "normal", or do you follow the "hypermiling" guidelines? If M/T what RPM do you shift at? What actual MPG are you getting city, highway, and combined?

If you don't get 40+, what would you use to try to get there? Which engine, etc...? Would you use carbs or fuel injection? M10? M42? M20b27? Which computer? Does anyone make an anti-performance chip that will focus on getting best MPG instead of most horses?

My eta would average 38MPG with 80% highway driving. A Mark D chip, I exhaust manifolds & exhaust, and a high flow cat were my only mods to the driveline. It sat on low rolling resistance tires and H&R OE sport springs.

Wouldn't that chip REDUCE fuel economy? I don't think 38MPG would convert him from Honda to BMW, he would have to get a solid 40+ average.

I would get 35-37 with my manual '91 318 bone stock mostly highway, and not driving like a hypermiler. A hotter tune will always get you better MPG if you can keep your foot out of it. e30's are not for someone who is only interested in MPG, tell him to stick with Honda if MPG puts as big of a smile on his face as burning rubber and corner carving does for us.

Could always go this route.

It made more torque on the bottom end with advanced ignition timing, so in actuality, that additional torque meant I didn't have to lean on the throttle as much. Ironically, I stayed out of the throttle much more with the chip than without it, so I definitely picked up a couple of MPG.

If he wants 40MPG+, a hybrid or a small and light I4-powered, FWD car would be the ticket.

Or he can drop an engine from a '78 Accord into an e30 and get 70MPG. lol

WTF happened to the front of that Alpina e30?!? How do you open the hood?

I got 35 in my eta. I honestly wouldn't get a bmw for an mpg car if he wants over 30 lol.

RWD isn't great for MPG. If there's one thing honda does well, it's mpg cars (mid 90s and before of course)

That was a prototype Alpina made for aero testing.

I'm glad that prototype never went anywhere. It looks like Darth Vader with buck teeth!
