How to make my V8 quiet?

Postby Yoshi » Fri Feb 28, 2014 6:13 pm

Could have sworn I started this thread here but I can't find it. Oh well.

I believe I get my car back this weekend. Right now the down pipes merge from 2 oval 5" pipes into a single 4" pipe straight back. Not quiet at all.

The goal is to be able to DD this car. EG I need to be able to listen to the stereo and hold a conversation while commuting at 6am.

My initial thought is to cut off the 4 inch pipe somewhere right after it merges and attach a 4 inch diameter cat. I don't have to pass emissions anymore but safety requires you have one. So a hi flow will help with sound AND safety inspection.

Then I figured I'd split it into dual 3 inches. I thought about 2.5 but I have some 3 inch stainless lying around. Plus dual 2.5 is less flow than a single 4 so I don't want to restrict it any more.

Then I I'm kind of lost. Maybe 2-4 mufflers back there. Run them parallel or do one tip on each side? I don't know what mufflers are the quietest either. Price is also a factor.

Thoughts? -yuush-

Why not do a single in dual our magnaflow? They are quiet with a nice rumble when cruising, but sound amazing when you stomp the go pedal. Not the cheapest muffler out there, but you get what you pay for when it comes to mufflers.

I had a pair of them on my impala and they sounded good imo. Borla makes a pretty quiet muffler but I never cared for the tone of them. Kind of have a drone at cruising speed. Have you looked into a take off system off an LS Camaro? My mom had a bone stock Z28 that was pretty quiet even when you were hard on it.

I'm kind of wary about using factory mufflers. They tend to be super heavy and restrictive.

I don't want to buy a bunch and try them out, I want to know before I buy that it's going to be quiet.

Anyone else getting weird ads on the forums today? Do I have a virus or does the forum?

Woot! I'd say a good high flow cat into dual 3 inch pipe with two single in double out mufflers at the end. You'd probably want to pick a cheap muffler that you can live with if you want to save money. I wish I could draw you the picture in my head because I believe it would be easy enough

Stock exhaust will readily support around 25-30% power increase. If you want it to be stupid ninja quite look into a set of stock big block Cadillac mufflers and resonators. You'll just hear a quiet breeze when you stomp on it.

Interested in this topic as well (though obviously not V8). My 3" exhaust is still crazy loud. Considering just going with the biggest magnaflow I can fit lol

What's your current setup?

I think the duals should quiet things down pretty good. Now that the car is finally back, I'd like to take a look under it but it freaking snowed :(

Borla XS seems to be cheap but also decent quality. I have one on my S52 car and it does great. I wonder how much quieter the duals will make it. Maybe I only need 2 mufflers back there. I'd have to make the exhaust then have to do it all over again.

Your concerned about restrictive mufflers, but your going to put silencers in the pipe?

I don't want to kill hp at the track. I'm ok killing hp driving around town. The silencers are removable. I talked with a friend who had them a long time ago, he said it took a while to get in and out. He also said that they started to rattle as it got warn out. Prob going to go with 4 borla XS mufflers.
