Loose gearstick e30 1984 323i

Postby e30 baur » Sun Oct 12, 2014 4:20 pm

Hey guys ... my gearstick is very loose yet otherwise works perfectly. Is there some way to adjust or tighten it in some way. I seem to remember an episode of Wheeler dealer where Ed changed the gearstick linkage. Is it the same for an e30 or is it a completely different issue?

Here's a decent article about it:

Honestly, even with all the UUC parts and whatnot, I still think e30's have a mediocre shifter at best. It'll never be as good as some of the other manual transmissions I've driven that bolt directly into the trans. It can get better, but don't expect a miracle.

Considering the age of the car and the likelyhood it has never been done, replacing all the shifer bushings would make a noticeable difference. Even stock replacement parts would make it feel like new again.

Remember that even in newer BMWs that use the same linkage system, they will always feel, on some level, like a bag of dicks. You'll have to put up with it even after all of the changes highlighted above.

It's interesting that you say that.

1) I'm surprised BMW used a single-shear linkage here, and I'm even more surprised that they STILL use it.

2) With the DSSR and stiffer bushings. The only real flex should be coming from the carrier. Right?

Double shear is better for this sort of thing in every way; the design of the shifter linkage and its failure/sloppiness is pretty much a text book example for why double-shear joints are superior. Any ideas why the hell DSSR linkages cost $130-150? I imagine I could have one made up way cheaper than that...

There's some minor slop in the transmission itself but negligible. I think most of the slop I find is from the carrier and the carrier mounting points. Mostly from the carrier mounting points. When I solid mounted mine to my drive tunnel, I lost a LOT of slop. I would imagine, if you just did that and got new bushings, you'd be fine.

I dunno, my z3 1.9 shifter swap has like, no slop in it. It's the notchiest shifter I've ever felt. In my Dad's e30 he could hardly find 1st gear it was so loose and a full bushing rebuild made it feel like new, almost no slop. You can't compare any stock setup to what you will find in a race car with a chassis mounted unit.
