E36 rack conversion help

Postby chinnick12 » Sun Jul 26, 2015 2:50 am

Hi all!
First time posting in here, just need a small tip of advice.
I've got an 89 E30 series 2 with an M40 auto, I've just done an E36 rack conversion and almost succeeded.. Almost..
My problem is that my steering linkage now fouls on the further forward header pipe quite badly.. So badly I can only turn about half a turn in total.. The point that fouls is the clamp/spline at the very bottom where it meets the rack pinion.

My question is, do I try and raise the engine slightly to give the pipe more clearance from the steering linkage or do I attempt to remove that part of the exhaust and make a slight dimple to give the rack more room?

I don't really want to do either, an M50 swap is the direction I'm heading in but unfortunately due to finances I'll have to make do with the good ol' M40 for now..

Any help would be muchly appreciated, TIA.ImageImage

Either get a flaming river U joint or... bend in the exhaust pipe?

This is obviously a RHD car correct? Like Yoshi said, you'll need the after rmarket U-Joint. I wouldn't suggest bending the pipe or lifting the engine.

lifting the engine will put the drive shaft at an odd angle, marginally effect handling characteristics, and make other things more difficult.

Decided I'm just going to swap back in the factory steering rack and leave the e36 rack for when I do an M50 swap, so I can at least drive her for the time being!

Probably not a bad idea.

Figured it'd be a better idea than trying to modify things around it and potentially create more problems.
