I dunno. There's no real reason to "stop" per se. I really want to see the condition of the metal underneath but I can't think of a good way to chip the paint off reliably. If I could figure that out, I'd probably chip stuff off at the 5 year mark.

Why not use aircraft stripper on the stuff, shouldn't affect the rust underneath.

"keeping up" is a loose term. I just have to let it sit outside lol. I'd love to do more experiments like this if people have ideas.

FYI I tossed this into a scrap pile while moving. I regret it. But the results are the same as the last update. I don't think this is a good test since the metal had such a nice life. I need to paint it on a car and let it get punishment. Like seriously, clear coat was a viable solution according to this test.

WD40 would probably have worked in a static test like that. I like the idea of taping your fender into quarters and painting each quarter with a different option. I'm sure that would win you some drifter cred somehow too.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. too bad I don't DD the E30 anymore. 24mpg with 87 octane trumps 10mpg with 91+ lol.

I still want a way that I can finally chip off at the paint to see how the metal under it is doing. But man that clear coat did SO much better than I expected it to.

I'm on mobile so I'll just post the Google doc link to the pictures. Clear coat finally failed but the white appliance epoxy is doing great. Basically everything is at least rusting around the edges but the rust bullet is by far doing the best. I'm extremely unhappy with the 3m rubberized under coating as this is what it was designed for.

That 3M stuff is garbage. Ive had rust coming through that stuff within weeks of application. POR 15 is good, but keep in mind if you read the instructions is says to top coat it once cured if the surface is exposed to UV. I still say the Stops Rust Chassis Saver is the best stuff out there. I've done several vehicles with it and even the ones that suffer winter driving it holds up awesome.
